Mailbox storage quota???

Just curious....would anyone want to share what size limits they place on their users' Exchange mailboxes? We have not had quotas before but are needing to implement them next week. We have a couple people with nearly 1.5 GB of stuff in their mailboxes. Just wondering?????

If you look back in the ITdiscuss history, to around January 23 of this year (subject: Email Box Quotas), you'll see that this got some rather active dialogue. Lots of variety of sizes -- your situation isn't at all unusual.

We run Exchange 2003. 400 MB limit per mailbox; prohibit send at 500 MB; prohibit send & receive at 1.25 GB. We have around 250 mailboxes and a total Exchange store size around 30 GB.

We have no limits currently on our 135 email accounts ... our 3 stores total over 100GB with a handful of users of 5GB each.

In dealing with users hitting their mailbox quota at COR, we've found that a large portion of the mailbox usage can be found in the Sent Items folder where there are hundreds of sent messages with attachments. Most users are quite happy to delete the messages with the attachments (many are e-mailing office documents back and forth for review, a process I hope to eliminate with Sharepoint). Ask Clif or me sometime about the Sent Items folder and the Great Exchange Meltdown of 2006 - This year's 4th of July was much better for me than last, because I spent most of 4/7/06 at work doing an emergency upgrade to Exchange 2003 while there were no users on it.

A lot of the mailbox consumption issue can be addressed most effectively by understanding what the users are storing in there and allocating quotas that take that into consideration. Some of our users (such as the SP's admin assistant) have larger mailbox (and disk) quotas simply due to the sheer volume of mail they deal with.
